Brailler [1999.33.7]
Perkins Brailler made and distributed by Howe Memorial Press, Watertown, USA, modified for use with the training LED display, made in around 1980. Sidney Smith, a teacher of visually impaired children at Shawgrove School in Manchester, invented a system to teach Braille. He adapted a microcomputer and Braille equipment to make learning Braille easier for local children. It used lights to provide feedback to the child and was a simpler way of learning than by using a Braille frame on its own. The system was installed by the Government Department of Trade & Industry in eight schools including Shawgrove School for evaluation but never went into production.
