Beyer-Garratt Steam Locomotive

The Beyer-Garratt Class GL locomotive was ordered by the South African Railway in 1929. It is an articulated locomotive based on a design patented by William Garratt in 1907. This design suited the line between Durban and Cato Ridge, which had very sharp bends. Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd built its first Garratt-type locomotive in 1909 and the last in 1968.

Beyer, Peacock also built more conventional locomotives. The tank locomotive Pender No. 3 (Works No. 1255) was built for the Isle of Man Railway in 1873.

Beyer, Peacock was established in Gorton, Manchester, in 1854. The Gorton works produced nearly 8,000 locomotives before it closed in 1966.
