Vulcan Steam Locomotive

The Vulcan Foundry 4-4-0 locomotive (Works No. 3064) was built in 1911. It is wider than locomotives used in Britain, because it was built for export to India. The railways in India had a gauge of 5 ft 6 in (1.78 m). From 1947 this locomotive was operated by the newly formed Pakistan Railways and had the serial number 3157. It was retired in 1982. The Vulcan Foundry made locomotives at Newton-le-Willows from 1830 until 1956.

The North West was an important centre for the manufacture of locomotives. Many locomotives were exported to countries of the former British Empire. Some of these exported locomotives were specially designed to meet operational requirements.
