The locomotive is possibly a Garratt type. The painting was made for publicity purposes, with the image appearing in H. W. Garratt's brochures about the Garratt articulated locomotive.
A copy of this painting appeared in The Model Engineer and Electrician August 5 1909, p.127, entitled "Looking Ahead Through Cab Window of Garratt Locomotive".
